When I finished Liz Brady's Bad Date I couldn't wait to read more about her tough woman protagonist, Jane Yeats, so I immediately made a grab for the next book in the series, See Jane Run!
In this, the third of the Jane Yeats mysteries, the Harley connoisseur rouses herself from her attempt to drown in beer, the grief of her lover's death in order to track down and kill his murderer. Liz Brady's story leads us through a grim exploration of prison life and the experiences and stresses of the prison warders and policemen and women who live and work every day in close contact with hardened criminals. Brady makes no space in her fiction for easy moralities, and I like best about her stories that I must as reader, debate complex issues of good vs bad (whatever good and bad might really mean) and also whether deep down I really do believe in what I hope I do. I must think whether in a pinch, I would not do what I think I know I ought not do!
Brady develops her characters through her (thus far) three-part series and by the end of this one, Jane seems ready to start on a new phase in her life, so once again I'm itching for the publication of the next book. But alas! google reveals no news of another Jane Yeats mystery on the horizon yet. Luckily I've still the first book in the series to get ahold of before I need to face the prospect of cold-turkey :-)
Google 'Moira Richards' to find links to her essays on Women Abuse, her reviews of woman-authored books as well as to other writing and editing work she does for various print and e-publications. She can often be found lounging about the staff rooms ofwomenwriters.net, absolutewrite.com and moondance.org - usually sipping tea, sometimes Jack Daniels.
Off-line, she teaches accounting and other numberly subjects to students at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in South Africa. And writes a poem or two.
