What is it about shoes that women find so appealing? Women have shoes of every color and style in their closet. Ask them. There's probably a pair they can't wear---okay, probably more than one. There's the pair they take out, drool over and say, "Remember when I wore these?"

Then there are the shoes with the high high heels. The shoes that pinch and make your feet ache. Why do we subject ourselves to this pain? Is it because high heels make your legs look more shapely and thin? Who doesn't want thin calves? Or is it because it might appeal to the opposite sex? Are we really that provincial?

When we wear shoes that are too small-narrow-tight, are we any better than the Chinese who used to bind the girls' feet--lily foot--virtually crippling them for life to make them more appealing and erotic to future husbands? It is said that the small foot resembles the way the foot and toes of a woman look during lovemaking. Unconsciously, we are seeking that look. Are we at the mercy of fashion designers or at the mercy of ourselves? Still, the click-click-click of a stiletto heel on the sidewalk thrills us, and we watch with envy the woman striding by.
