In the mountains women stash
their grief in dough bowls
and knead it on down
to a comfortable size
to be managed and twisted
into cathead biscuits
eaten
and stored near the heart.

Phibby has a chapbook, Indian Wind Song. She's been published in Appalachian Journal, Afternoon, Greene's Magazine, Horsefeathers, the Layman, Free Verse Poetry Journal, Apples and Oranges, and various others. She lives in the Appalachian Mts. of southwest Virginia surrounded by a huge family and assortment of dogs. All of them tempermental and affectionate.
