Motherdrama
My mother called
long distance to talk
about the stupidities
that grow in her garden.
I should win an oscar for best actress
in a boring Motherdrama of
tomatoes and pansies...
She is 60 now
and her vision sucks
and she shouldn't drive
anything faster than a lawn
mower with engine knock
She says predictable
mother things I cringe
to hear and seems to know me
not at all...
I roll my eyes impatient
to get on with my life that has
screeched to a halt 600 miles south
and still she drones on,
that mother voice...
But when I was four I woke up
in the dark void of a speeding car
and the fur collar of her coat
brushed my fevered cheek and her arms
of soft wool held my confused fear...
I still remember
and love her for that.
